Girmit

Girmit is a puffed rice dish famous in North Karnataka. This dish has amazing flavours, the spice from green chilies, sweet from jaggery and sour from tamarind all perfectly balanced. The dish is very simple to make and can be made anytime without any hassle for a quick munch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 2-3 chopped green chilies
  • 1/4th cup tamarind extract
  • 2 tbsp jaggery
  • 100 gm fried bengal gram powder
  • Curry leaves few
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4th tsp turmeric powder
  • Mustard seeds a pinch
  • Puffed rice

Method:

  1. In a kadhai/pan heat 1/2 cup oil on low flame, add mustard to it, once it starts crackling add diced onion, chopped green chilies and curry leaves. Saute this till onions turn translucent.
  2. After the onions turn translucent add turmeric powder and mix well, then add the tamarind extract little by little and stirring as pouring as the oil is hot and mix well.
  3. Add the crushed jaggery and stir till it melts. Cook the mixture till it thickens slightly and allow it cool.
  4. For every serving of puffed rice add 3-5 tbsp of mixture, salt to taste, fried bengal gram powder and mix it well.
  5. Serve it with finely chopped onion and mirchi bajji.
